The Perfect Takeaway

Summertime often brings thoughts of a perfect getaway, maybe to the lake or the beach or that special golf course. If you are serious about imporving your golf game, what you should be thinking about is the perfect takeaway.

The perfect takeaway is a necessity and the foundation of a solid golf swing. If you perform the takeaway move correctly consistently, you will see your shot consistency improve. The perfect takeway consists of the following factors:

1. Correct set-up
Briefly, your set-up should be balanced and square. Your hands should be even with or slightly ahead of the ball. If you have an exagerrated forward press, work on eliminating it!

2. Move only your big muscles (shoulders & back)
Your hands and wrists should NOT move until the clubhead has passed your waist. Starting your swing with just your shoulders and back will keep your hands quiet and keep the club in the correct position.

3. Allow your weight to shift
In turning your shoulders and back away from the target (instead of lifting the club with your hands), you should naturally create a weight shift (or pivot) on to your back foot (right foot for right hand players). Many players will immediately counteract this weight shift by straightening the right leg. That almost always creates a slice. Maintain the flex in your right knee throughout your takeaway.

4. Maintain your triangle (or "Y")
Your chest and arms form a triangle at address (or a "Y" if you include the club). Keep that shape during the takeaway until the club is comfortably past your waist.

Perfecting these four simple elements will give you a perfect takeaway and improve your swing. Use your shadow on a sunny day or a mirror to see if you are performing these moves correctly.
